December Home Blues

December, 'tis the time of the year,
Families are at home, doing the cheer,
Holly, jolly,
Glee and folly,
But I'm far away, shedding a tear.

This is a limerick that I wrote, it being one since it follows the rhyme scheme of AABBA. It portrays a student studying abroad, and his sadness of not being able to be united with his family during the holiday season. To set a light and humorous tone in the first four lines with the usage of positively connotative and partly-slang words such as "cheer", "holly", and "folly". The sharp contrast of line 5 in comparison to the first four can be interpreted as both pitiful and humorous (humour is one of the major parts of a limerick.), due to the sudden "twist" to the poem.

  1. this is a really cute limerick. I like how it's lighthearted, but at the same time, it is sad. I like how it's based on a student missing his family, it really does evoke how he feels, and even though it is short, describes his emotions perfecly. I agree that it is both pitiful and humorous and I like the twist at the end as it makes it different than other limericks Great job!

  2. This limerick could almost be a Christmas carol, with its cheery tone. The student's plight, however, will be understood by many, as many students are immigrants here.

  3. This veers away from the usual light and humorous tone of the limerick. But it is effective! The first four lines are actually deceivingly light-hearted until the last line. The last line is very powerful and leaves the reader with feelings of pity and sorrow.
